Abortion

Right to Life of Northeast Indiana

Stance

Right to Life of Northeast Indiana (RLNI) opposes abortion. We recognize that unexpected pregnancies can present significant personal, financial, and medical challenges. However, abortion intentionally ends the life of an innocent human being. Every human life possesses inherent dignity and value from the moment of conception, regardless of age, size, development, or circumstance. We affirm that both mother and child deserve protection, support, and compassionate care.

What is it

Science shows that human life begins at fertilization (conception). Abortion is the intentional ending of a pre-born human’s life, at any stage of pregnancy. Abortion is not a simple medical procedure, but a life-changing decision that has significant consequences for women, their future families, and our society.

Chemical Abortion:

A chemical abortion, also called the abortion pill, ends a first-trimester pregnancy using a series of two medications. The first pill, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain pregnancy. Without it, the fetal heartbeat stops, along with its development and growth. The second pill, misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the baby.

Surgical Abortion:

A surgical abortion is a procedure used to end a pregnancy. Methods are dilation and evacuation (D & E), dilation and curettage (D & C), vacuum aspiration, or partial-birth abortion. The process typically begins with medical or mechanical cervical dilation, often started the day before the procedure to prepare the body. Surgical abortions are most commonly performed during the second or third trimester and may require a hospital stay, along with anesthesia or an epidural for pain management. During the procedure, a physician uses forceps and suction instruments to remove the baby.

Difference between Miscarriage Care and Abortion Procedures:

Miscarriage care is provided after a pregnancy has ended naturally and focuses on protecting the mother's health by managing complications such as bleeding, infection, or retained fetal tissue. An abortion is a procedure or medication used with the intent of ending a baby’s life before the baby can survive outside the womb. While some of the same medications or surgical techniques may be used in both situations, the underlying reason is different.

Core Moral Concern

Abortion intentionally ends the life of a human being before birth. At the moment of conception a new human being comes into existence. It possesses its own unique genetic identity and continues to grow through the same stages of development as every other member of the human family. While all human beings are dependent on others at various points in life, dependence does not diminish a person's inherent worth or right to life. Because the purpose of abortion is to end the life of the unborn child, it cannot exist without the death of that child. Society rightly works to protect vulnerable human beings from harm, and the preborn are among the most vulnerable. Respect for human dignity requires recognizing the value of every human life, regardless of age, size, level of development, gender, race, ability, or dependency. When viewed through the lens of human rights and the equal dignity of all people, abortion raises profound moral concerns about who is included in the human community and who is entitled to legal protection.

Statistics

Key data findings examining the societal and personal impacts of abortion procedures.

Women whose first pregnancy ends in abortion are 3.4 times more likely to experience an increase in outpatient mental health treatment compared to those who had a live birth.

24% of women described their abortions as “unwanted or coerced”
