8 Practical Ways for Churches to Get Involved in the Pro-Life Movement this Summer
“Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not He who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not He who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will He not repay man according to his work?” - Proverbs 24:11-12
The call to believers throughout Scripture is clear: protect the innocent, care for the vulnerable, and stand up for the oppressed: the orphan, the widow, and those without a voice. Yet church life can be busy. Between services, Bible studies, small groups, youth programs, and outreach events, adding something new can feel overwhelming.
The good news is that engaging in the pro-life movement doesn’t have to be complicated or burdensome. Whether you’re a pastor or a parishioner, there are simple, meaningful ways your church can make a real impact this summer.
1. Include Pro-Life Petitions in Weekly Prayer
Incorporate intentional prayers for the abortion-vulnerable, medical professionals, and an end to abortion in your regular intercessions. You might even add prayers for husbands and wives, for pregnant and postpartum mothers, for women suffering after an abortion decision. If you are looking for more ideas, Priests for Life has a list here.
2. Write encouraging letters to a mom who chose life.
This simple but powerful idea can be done in 5 minutes at the beginning of women’s Bible study or youth group, done by a craft or card ministry group, or it can be a whole evening of fun! These letters can be dropped off at your local pregnancy resource center to be distributed within your community, or, the pro-life nonprofit Embrace Grace gives out over 2,700 handwritten letters to brave moms who choose life nationally each month. They have a template you can download and easy instructions on their website here.
3. Celebrate Mother’s Day by handing out carnations.
Bless the mothers in your congregation and support Right to Life of Northeast Indiana! Our annual Mother’s Day Carnation Project partners with churches across our eight counties to recognize the gift of life and the calling of mothers through beautiful flowers. This simple, meaningful project is a wonderful way for your church to demonstrate its support for the pro-life mission and is one of our largest fundraisers of the year. The deadline has passed to order flowers this year, but be sure to mark your calendar for next year, or contact lucy@ichooselife.org for more information.
4. Share resources in church bathrooms.
Hanging signage in bathroom stalls for information on the local pregnancy resource center and human trafficking hotline information is one of the easiest ways to get involved. Yes, the men’s restroom too! You never know who might see it and need the information: a visitor, a struggling teen, or a post-abortive woman who doesn’t know about the healing available to her in your community.
5. Have youth pastors and leaders encourage Life Defenders Summer Camp attendance.
A weekend packed with pro-life learning and lots of fun with like-minded peers, this event for high school and college students is one that students come home from with a deeper pro-life conviction, new friendships, and a readiness to return again the next year. For registration information, click here.
6. Offer practical help to families.
Having a coordinator run meal trains for families who just had a new baby, welcomed a new foster child into their home, suffered a miscarriage, or experienced a death in the family is a way to take a burden off of the family's plate and allow the congregation to get involved with and care for one another. Organizing childcare for events so that parents can make it, or perhaps helping coordinate transportation for a single parent, are all a few practical ways to help support families.
7. Start a pro-life group at your church!
If any or all of these ideas have inspired you, why not start a pro-life group? This group can get together monthly or quarterly, implementing some of the ideas above and encourage an even stronger pro-life presence within your congregation. These groups can help coordinate attendance to the local March for Life, invite local speakers from Right to Life of Northeast Indiana or local pregnancy resource centers, organize collecting donations for Christmas presents for foster children, participate in sidewalk advocacy, and help foster a culture of life within your congregation.
8. Attend the 29th Annual Fall Banquet on October 12th!
Gather your congregation for a powerful night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum featuring Kayleigh McEnany, former White House Press Secretary and current Fox News host. As a mother of three and a seasoned political commentator, Kayleigh will share her unique perspective on the pro-life movement and the bold action needed in today's culture. You will also hear the incredible testimony of David J. Scotton, an adoption advocate whose life was saved at the last possible second by a sidewalk advocate. Enjoy a delicious dinner and fellowship as we are inspired to stand for the unborn. Purchase a table or tickets below.
Being a pro-life church is more than a statement, it’s about following God’s command to rescue those being taken to death. It’s about creating a church culture that upholds the dignity of the unborn child, and supports his mother, too. Even small, simple changes can impact the culture of your church and the culture of life in our community.
This summer, as new life blooms all around us, may our churches reflect that same commitment to life, standing boldly for truth while extending grace, mercy, and care to all.
